Few of us like to think too much about the end of our lives – however death is a part of life. One Australian dies every 3 minutes and 17 seconds, with 52% dying in acute hospitals, and the death rates is projected to double in the next 25 years as the ageing population increases.

Join Associate Professor Kim Devery, at this free event, in a discussion on what clinicians can do to improve the quality of end-of-life care to benefit patients and their families.

They will be exploring topics including research and development, space entrepreneur development, defence including earth observation, satellite communications and space-based position, navigation and timing, space technologies for the Internet of Things, and not to forget about the space junk that we forgot to tidy up!

New OpportunitiesInternational Collaboration opportunities with Temple University, USA

New Venture Institute

Flinders University New Venture Institute (NVI) will be hosting around 20 US-based academics from 15 to 24 July 2019, providing a unique opportunity for Flinders' researchers to develop international collaborations with US College academics from Temple University and other East Coast USA Colleges in the areas of innovation, internationalisation, advanced manufacturing, defence-led innovation and regional economic transformation.

There will be three main components of the visit.

These include:

  1. Global best practice innovation and enterprise experiential training, delivered by NVI Program Director Assoc. Professor Margaret Ledwith;
  2. Site visits to growth small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in Southern Adelaide and Western Sydney (in collaboration with UWS) focused on innovative manufacturing, internationalisation and regional economic growth;
  3. Comparative case study development with Flinders researchers on issues of business internationalisation, regional economic transformation, innovative manufacturing

NVI are currently inviting expressions of interest (EOIs: closing 28 June 2019) from Flinders' researchers who wish to be involved in exploring partnerships with these visiting academics with the aim to: co‐develop case studies; white papers; journal articles; conference and grant submissions. 

Successful researchers will need to be able to commit to a minimum of two of the following four sessions during the visit:

  • Monday 15 July 1:30pm - 5:00pm
  • Tuesday 16 July 11:30 - 1:00pm
  • Wednesday 17 July 11:30 - 1:00pm
  • Thursday 18 July 9:00 - 11:00am

Flinders' researchers will also be able to participate in site visits to local SME’s to hear about their journey toward internationalisation and the role of innovation in their development.

Temple University (Philadelphia, USA) have strong links with large defence primes in their region, and supply chain participation by growth focused SME’s has been a hallmark of their economy over many years. It is therefore anticipated that there will be interest in government‐led development through recent defence procurement, which parallels with Philadelphia’s own economic transformation. Temple's Enterprise Consulting Unit recent win of a US Department of Education Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) grant has opened up this opportunity for Flinders' researchers.

New OpportunitiesGlobal Connections Fund - 2019 Bridging Grants

Bridging Grant eligibility testing will open 3 June 2019, until 17:00 17 June 2019, Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

Bridging Grants (BG) are a program of assistance that targets early stage proof of concept and knowledge transfer, product development and market testing, innovation and commercialisation activities.

They are designed to support international small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs)-Researcher partnerships grow beyond an initial level of engagement such as might be developed during a Priming Grant funded process, into a strong collaboration which leads to the translation of research knowledge and intellectual property into market ready products or services.

Bridging Grants applications can be prepared and lodged any time after 3 June, only if you have received notice of approval to proceed and supplied a Bridging Grant Application number (BGA Number). If you have been supplied with a BGA number, please contact Mary Lyons, Senior Research Grants Officer (IGII) of your intent to apply for a Bridging Grant.

Please note that the Global Connections Fund will only support multiple EOI applications from university research groups, departments or schools, provided the proposed projects are employing distinctly different technologies and/or are in different areas of research endeavour. In these cases, the proposed SME partners must also be different for each project proposal.  

The closing date for eligibility testing for Bridging Grant applications is 17:00 17 June 2019 (AEST). Applications can be prepared and lodged once  eligibility is approved and the closing date for full applications is 17:00 1 July 2019 (AEST). The Australian Synchrotron is accepting proposals for the third round of 2019 (September - December) for beamtime.

The proposal deadline is 11.59 pm 21 May 2019 (Melbourne time). It is strongly encouraged that the proposal is submitted well before 11.59pm Melbourne time as the proposal system may experience heavy use in the time leading up to the deadline.

New OpportunitiesAINSE Early Career Researcher Grant 2019

AINSE

AINSE Limited (the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering) are announcing a new funding opportunity available to Early Career Researchers at AINSE Member Institutions and/or Organisations.

The Early Career Researcher Grant (ECRG) is offered by AINSE to suitably-qualified persons holding a postdoctoral position at an AINSE Member Institution and/or Organisation and wishing to undertake work in collaboration with ANSTO.

Applications will be received up to 11:59pm AEST 1 July 2019. The Flinders internal closing date is 17 June 2019. For application advice and assistance, contact Mary Lyons, Senior Research Grants Officer (IGII).

The AINSE ECRG is a one-time payment offered to scholars who are in the first five years of employment as an Early Career Researcher, with allowances made for career breaks of a reasonable time frame. The recipient must have been awarded a proposal to work at an ANSTO facility, or be listed on an approved proposal to commence work at an ANSTO facility within 6 months of receiving the grant.

The award provides a grant of A$10,000 excl. GST that can be spent on travel, accommodation and consumables relating to the recipient’s approved ANSTO proposal, and carer requirements, subject to AINSE discretion. The grant will be delivered to the host institution and placed into the recipient’s research account. Responsibility for establishing taxation liability lies with the grant recipient.

A tender has been called for a Community Needs Analysis by the City of Marion.

The purpose of this project is for Council to gain an in-depth understanding of the City of Marion’s liveability.

The Call closes on 2.00 PM Wednesday 22 May 2019. For advice, documentation, and tender application assistance, please contact Daniela Tyson, Senior Contracts Officer (Research).

This project will provide evidence-based findings and recommendations that will enable council’s future directions and investments to be targeted to meet community priorities in the most informed, equitable, and effective way to enable healthier and more liveable communities. It will also inform Council’s suite of Community Indicators.

The project will identify current and potential future issues, barriers and opportunities that can be commonly experienced by members of the City of Marion community that impact on a person’s quality of life.

This will be achieved through identification and analysis of data and information to identify current and potential future community issues and opportunities within the City of Marion.

The CSL Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian biomedical researcher for significant lifetime achievements in biomedical science and/or human health advancement for research conducted primarily in Australia.

In addition to the silver medal, the award carries a prize of $50,000 due to the generous support of CSL Limited.

The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) that address research, development & extension (RD&E) priorities nominated by the FRDC’s Advisory Groups: Research Advisory Committees (RACs), Industry Partnership Agreements (IPAs) and FRDC Subprograms.

The nominated RD&E priorities for investment are outlined on the FRDC website.

EOIs that address multiple priorities are encouraged.

Applicants may also submit an EOI that does not address a nominated priority; however, it should be noted that preference may be given to applications that address nominated priorities.

If you do wish to submit an application that does not address one of these priorities, it is recommended that you first discuss your research concept with the relevant FRDC Advisory Group contact. Support can be demonstrated through formal letters of support, in-kind contributions and project cash contributions.

All EOIs MUST be completed via FishNet. Refer to the FRDC website for more information on the FRDC’s process for Applying for Funding.

Applications must be finalised in FishNet by 17 June 2019. The Flinders internal closing date is 27 May 2019 for a completed final draft application. As letters of Support and/or matching or co- investment funding may be required.

Georgina Sweet Awards

The Georgina Sweet Awards for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science were created by Professor Leann Tilley as part of her Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship program to promote and support female scientists who demonstrate excellence in the area of Quantitative Biomedical Science.

Quantitative Biomedical Science is Biological/Biomedical Research that employs a quantitative approach, particularly in areas such as Computational Biology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Genomics, Structural Biology, Cell Biology etc.

Two new awards were established in 2016:

Georgina Sweet Award for Women in Quantitative Biomedical Science: Up to three awards of $25,000 each will be made each year to Australian female researchers who demonstrate excellence in the area of quantitative biomedical science. Applications for this year’s award will close on 31 May, 2019. The Flinders internal closing date for this Award is 17 May 2019 for a completed final draft application. Georgina Sweet Travel Support for a Female Keynote Speaker in Quantitative Biomedical Science: Up to three awards of $3,000 each are available each year to support the attendance of a female keynote speaker at an Australian conference. Medical Device Partnering Program

Flinders University’s Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) is an ideas incubator - fostering collaborations between researchers, industry, end-users and government to develop medical technologies with global market potential.

Anyone with an idea for a medical device or assistive technology, needing R&D assistance, can apply for up to 250 hours R&D assistance and 30 hours market opportunity assessment.

MDPP is unique in its focus and the way that it operates. It works at the very early stage, turning ideas into proven concepts. Rather than ‘push’ technology towards applications, the Program invites inventors, clinicians and researchers to submit ideas for new medtech innovations.  

It has reliable processes and tools that enable partners to rapidly work together under low risk conditions. It is able to leverage a diverse range of expertise to contribute to product conceptualisation, including health professionals, manufacturers, engineers and service providers. The focused scale of a 250-hour project, combined with a product opportunity assessment, delivers tangible outcomes for clients.

Applications have opened for Wine Australia travel bursaries for travel commencing between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020.

Travel bursaries

Travel bursaries can fund travel, study tours or conferences to develop your knowledge and skills in your area of research, and to network with the international research community. See Wine Australia's application guidelines for further details.

Visiting scholar bursaries 

Wine Australia invites and assesses applications for visiting scholar bursaries throughout the year. Visiting scholar bursaries can bring international experts to Australia to participate in workshops, meetings, conferences, symposia or research projects. See Wine Australia's application guidelines for further details.

 

To apply for a Wine Australia travel bursary, you must complete an application online through the Clarity Investment Management System (CIMS).

If you have not used CIMS before, a log in and password can be obtained by emailing your full name, address, contact phone number and name of affiliated organisation to applications@wineaustralia.com.

Wine Australia will consider applications that support international travel for conference attendance and/or study tours that align with our RD&E priority areas, with the two-fold purpose of:

  • demonstrating benefit to the Australian grape and wine sector and/or existing research, and
  • supporting careers for grape and wine researchers in the sector and academia by providing opportunities to broaden their professional development, particularly early in their career. 

Please consult the Wine Australia Strategic Plan 2015–2020 and the application guidelines for both the travel and visiting scholar bursaries when developing applications.

The Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Incorporated (ACSPRI)'s 2019 Winter Program is now up open for enrolments.

The Program will be held in Brisbane, at the University of Queensland over 2 weeks; 24-28 June and 1-5 July.

ACSPRI's courses are:

  • small group, capped at 20 people;
  • applied, with 'hands on' exercises;
  • taught by experienced instructors;
  • run across 5 days
  • cover qualitative and quantitative methodologies;
  • range from fundamentals courses (level 1) right through to very advanced (level 5);
  • include lunch, morning and afternoon tea
