A two day workshop focusing on building hard copy or internet surveys to meet a variety of needs. Topics include uses of surveys, constructing survey questions that are clear and unbiased, the need to match attitudinal or behavioural data collection with the purpose of the survey, and combining objective and open-ended questioning in order to enhance the usability of results.

An Introduction to Mixed Methods Research Design with Dr Nicola McNeil - 9-10 April
This Master Class will examine the key features of mixed methods research designs. Participants will explore the different types, analysing the benefits and challenges associated with the design and implementation of each design including analysis and write of of mixed methods studies.

Introduction to Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Stata with Dr Joanna Dipnall - 19-20 April
A foundation for those wanting to use SEM to explore and test complex relationships. This Master-class is designed for participants with an introductory-level understanding of the statistical methods of regression analysis and exploratory factor analysis. Participants will experience hands-on SEM examples and build their own Stata SEM models.

This 2 day workshop is designed to teach the novice the essentials skills in using Nvivo for research, through hands on experience. The course assumes no prior knowledge of Nvivo.

This 'hands on' course is designed for those familiar with qualitative research, who want to further your understanding around the mechanics of setting up, and moderating focus group based research projects. The course is also useful for those who may be responsible for, or need to commission qualitative research.

The annual AeRO National Forum is a one day event, which attracts senior staff from its members as well as eResearch leads from institutions, NCRIS capabilities, discipline communities, research centres, funding bodies, government and other agencies. Representatives from the Department of Education and Training also attend. At the 2017 Forum, there were over 100 attendees from over 50 organisations.

The theme for this year’s forum is The NRDC Grand Challenge. It will be held on 14 March 2018 at University House, Canberra.

The key attributes/outcomes of the original National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) investments in 2006 were that they were national and collaborative. Perhaps more significantly, they were also disruptive and there is no doubt they have enabled Australian researchers to differentiate themselves on a global scale, particularly in relation to the use of digital techniques and the role data plays in modern research.

The NRDC Grand Challenge is therefore to reduce the complexity, improve the ease of use, lower the barrier to entry, and increase the adoption of digital data tools and techniques for all Australian researchers by establishing a cohesive and sustainable approach to fostering the development of digital data skills and the integration of digital data technology platforms and practices.

The Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group) are inviting  interested defence personnel, defence industry participants and academics from the 32 Australian Universities that are party to the Defence Science Partnering Deed to participate in a half day workshop to contribute to the development of the long term capability and capacity building research plan for the ‘Research Network for Undersea Decision Superiority’ (the Network).

Invitees will gain an understanding of the exciting long term research opportunities available in defence and to help frame the research capability-building agenda for the new national, collaborative Network.

Defence Science and Technology Group, as part of the Future Submarine Program Science and Technology Plan, is seeking to establish a long term research initiative to build world class research capabilities and capacities in Australian partner universities and leverage the significant skills, expertise, networks and infrastructure of Australia’s research base for sovereign benefit.

This initiative, the Network, focuses on the human element and will provide a mechanism to fund and oversee research projects that lead to improved decision making in the context of military operations in future submarines. Enabling submariners to make the best decisions possible in a low information environment has been identified as an area of focus for research for improving future capability.

As part of the process of setting up this Network, a research capability and capacity building exercise is being undertaken to facilitate the establishment of a consensus on long term needs and opportunities, as well as clear outcomes to guide the investment of resources. Information sessions on the Network, followed by formal facilitated workshops will be undertaken in February 2018 around the country to establish research themes leading to the desired capability.

These one hour sessions are great for new and existing users to keep up to date with the latest developments, and also get a refresher on the best ways to use RP and how to find funding efficiently. The College of Science and Engineering Ecology and Evolution Research Group are hosting a seminar on Wednesday 22 November 2017 in South Lecture Theatre 1 from 12 PM to 1 PM. Dr Damien Maher from Southern Cross University will be presenting a seminar on Taking the lab to the field: insights gained from in situ measurements of isotopes. After the presentation, pizza will be available in the Biology Tea Room (Room 143).

Traditional measurement of stable and radioisotopes has required discrete samples to be collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis on specialised instrumentation such as Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, or liquid scintillation counters. These laborious requirements have led to experimental designs that often limit sampling resolution. Recent advances in technology have allowed for in situ measurement of some stable and radioisotopes. Here I will present some of our recent work using cavity ring down spectroscopy for the measurement of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methane concentrations and stable carbon isotopes. I will also present work on coupling these analysis with alpha decay detectors for radon, which is an excellent groundwater/porewater tracer. We have applied these techniques to a range of research questions including estuarine, mangrove and coral reef biogeochemistry, and fugitive emissions from coal seam gas fields. By taking the lab to the field we are able to sample at extremely high resolution, and the availability of real-time data allows for "on-the-fly" decision making, optimising valuable time spent in the field.

Dr Maher works on various aspects of the global carbon, nutrient and hydrological cycles. He incorporates stable- and natural radio-isotopes into his work to characterize greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon and nutrient cycling pathways in aquatic and terrestrial environment. Dr Maher also works on groundwater-surface water interactions, and the role of groundwater as a vector for solute transport.

The Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA) is offering a presentation on Collaboration for Industry Impact – Deep Dive Workshop here in Adelaide on 7 - 8 December 2017. The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Programme supports industry-led collaborations between industry, researchers and the community. In its 27-year history, it has proven to be an effective model for linking researchers with industry to address R&D challenges with commercial outcomes. Bidding for a CRC is a highly competitive process requiring cross-disciplinary teams to come together and collaborate. This takes planning, time and patience. Developed by the CRC Association and Collabforge, this workshop (two half-days) will combine practical bid-creation content with a deep dive into the theory and practice of collaboration.

The two day workshop will commence at 1:00 PM on Thursday, 7 December 2017 and finish at 5:00 PM that day. The Friday presentation will commence at 9:00 AM and finish at 12:30 PM. The workshop will teach participants what makes a great bid, what the process of bid development entails, the roles of all bid participants, and how to build effective relationship / communication between researchers and industry to develop a compelling bid. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to develop their ideas in conjunction with guidance materials and feedback, finishing with substantive parts of their bid concepts being fleshed out (these can be hypothetical CRCs, bids planned for submission, or even ARC Linkage type concepts).

This will help researchers to better understand how they can build successful partnerships with their industry partners, and form a bid concept that will deliver industry impact.

Who should attend:

• Researchers who have the responsibility for or interest to develop CRC and CRC-P bids
• Administrators who have the responsibility for helping coordinate, develop, approve and or administer CRC and CRC-P bids (eg from Commercialisation, Research, Scholarships, etc)

Key learning outcomes:

• Improved capability in developing and progressing CRC bids
• Understanding the role of 'impact thinking' in successful bids and CRCs
• Common language, frameworks and methods for collaboration
• Methods for stakeholder and partner analysis, tips and tricks for involving industry participants in the best way at the right time, and for developing and testing bid ideas
• Generally improved collaboration capability through applied collaboration experiences with those in the room on the day

How it works:

• Key concepts, methods and reference materials for successful CRCs and industry collaboration are presented across two, consecutive half-day sessions.
• Participant ideas and plans are applied directly to the materials presented, with groups learning from one another, as well as receiving feedback from the presenters.
• Both half-day sessions are appropriate for a general audience, as well as those developing specific bids, and we strongly encourage participants to attend both sessions.

Jane Burden, General Manager at BreastScreen SA has been invited to present a talk on research opportunities with Breast Screen SA at Tonsley, Thursday, 9 November 2017. BreastScreen SA is part of the national screening program of BreastScreen Australia. It is a statewide population based radiology service. Jane has been the General Manager at BreastScreen SA for 4 years. She has 30 years’ experience working in the health industry and has a Masters Degree in Primary Health Care and a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology.

Since 2015, Jane has chaired the National Clinical Advisory Committee. This committee is comprised of leaders in various medical disciplines. For the 2017 Dean Jaensch Lecture, Paul Kelly, Editor-at-Large on The Australian, has been invited to present on The Crisis in Australian Democracy. The Lecture will be held in Room 1, Level 1, Flinders in the City, on Wednesday 8 November 2017. The Dean Jaensch Lecture pays tribute to Flinders University’s notable Professor of Politics, Dean Jaensch, a respected political analyst with particular interests in electoral politics, voting systems and political behaviour, and political parties.

Paul was previously the Editor-in-Chief of the Australia and he writes on Australian politics, public policy and international affairs. He has covered Australian governments from Gough Whitlam to Malcolm Turnbull. He is a regular television commentator on the Sky News program, Australian Agenda. He is the author of nine books including the End of Certainty on the politics and economics of the 1980’s, Triumph and Demise on the Rudd-Gillard era and The March of Patriots, providing a re-interpretation of Paul Keating and John Howard in office.

Paul holds a Doctor of Letters from Melbourne University and in 2010 he was a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at Melbourne University. He holds Honorary Doctorates from Sydney University, Griffith University and the University of NSW. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. He has been a Fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Menzies Centre, King’s College London.

This practical intensive course will teach you everything you need to know about commercialisation by:

• Demystifying the commercialisation process;
• Exploring new investment markets;
• Presenting practical and interactive sessions on legal, IP, business model development, market identification, presentation skills and networking;
• Honing your skills using real time practical exercises relevant to your project;
• Providing you access through interactive mentoring sessions with business coaches, industry leaders and innovation mentors.

The workshop will focus on the background work required to build a strong business case. This includes developing a network, understanding intellectual property law, sourcing practical support, and choosing the funding option that is aligned with the prospects of the research.
