Flinders Research NewsNHMRC Sapphire implemntation update

Sapphire logo

The NHMRC has provided an update on their ongoing development of their new grants management solution, Sapphire.

Recent testing has identified some additional complexities that require resolution. As a result, the NHMRC has decided to defer the planned October pilots to avoid any potential for disruption to applicants.

NHMRC’s cautious approach also reflects advice received from the research sector to minimise potential distractions from the implementation of the new grant program.

All new and existing grant schemes will be managed through RGMS until further notice. This includes CREs, Development Grants, TCRs and Investigator Grants.

Your researcher CV and Profile will continue to be managed through RGMS until further notice and all potential applicants are recommended to ensure that their CV and Profile are up-to-date.

For more information about Sapphire, please visit NHMRC’s website.

Flinders Research NewsService One Research Services

ServiceOne on a tablet

A new approach to support research staff with research activities has recently been delivered. Service One, an online service request management tool accessible through Okta, aims to provide a range of service requests related to research.

As Service One is accessed through Okta, profile information (name, email address, phone number) is automatically carried across into each service request to save the Requestor time and effort.

A small number of drop-down and multiple-choice fields collect the right information at the right time to reduce the need for multiple emails and phone calls with the Service Provider. Once submitted, the service request is instantly sent to the right person.

The research services currently available include:

  • I need help with a research contract
  • I need help employing a Research Assistant
  • I need help with a research funds transfer
  • I need help with a research project invoice request
  • I need help confirming insurance and indemnity for my research project
  • I need help notifying the achievement of a project milestone

Connection with the Service Provider is easy. 'My Requests' - a feature of Service One designed for the Requestor - shows the real-time status of the service request (e.g., In Progress or Fulfilled), the name of the Service Specialist and their contact details.

With these features, Service One aims to deliver a consistent approach for research staff to request a service in one place, find the right service request within one minute, and complete one streamlined request for each service.

We encourage you to try Service One. If there is a research service that you would like to see on Service One please compete the "new idea" or "feedback" form on the Service One Homepage.

Flinders Research NewsChanges to Social and Behavioural Human Research Ethics Committee submissions

people around a table

The Flinders Social and Behavioural Human Research Ethics Committee (SBREC) have brought in two changes that will take effect from 1 July 2018.

To minimise the number of forms that applicants need to submit, the Low / Negligible Risk Assessment Form has been merged with the Application Form. All applicants are now required to complete the risk assessment at the front of the new application form. This section has undergone minimisation from the original Low / Negligible Risk Assessment Form.

The second change is to the Response to Conditional Approval and Deferral forms. For student led projects all conditional approval responses and deferral responses now must be signed by the student and student’s supervisor. If the principal researcher is a staff member, then the forms do not need to be signed before submission.

The new forms are now available for download at the Guidelines, Forms and Templates webpage on the Human Ethics section, Research Development and Support.

If you have any queries or require assistance in relation to these new forms, please do not hesitate to contact Andrea Mather or Rae Tyler on human.researchethics@flinders.edu.au.

Flinders Research NewsIt's finally here! The new Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

2018 Code

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018 (the 2018 Code) and the Guide to Managing and Investigating Potential Breaches of the Code, 2018 (the Investigation Guide) have now been released.

The clearly articulated principles and responsibilities in the 2018 Code will promote greater consistency across the research sector and build upon the foundation laid by the 2007 Code to ensure that research conducted in Australia is of the highest quality and meets the utmost standards of integrity.

The changes within the 2018 Code and the Investigation Guide are currently being reviewed by Flinders Research Management. The Research Integrity and Misconduct section of the Flinders website will be updated shortly. The majority of the information on the pages relate to the 2007 Code, but the links to the 2018 Code and the Investigation Guide have been included.

The 2018 Code and Investigation Guide are the result of an extensive review and consultation process. The 2018 Code presents eight clear principles of responsible research and 29 key responsibilities for researchers and institutions. The Investigation Guide describes, in detail, processes for managing and investigating potential breaches of the 2018 Code that can be applied to the range of research contexts in Australia—from small medical research institutions to large universities and across all research disciplines. It aims to ensure procedural fairness to all parties.

The 2018 Code and Investigation Guide are only one part of the framework for ensuring research is conducted with integrity and the new Code will be complemented by revisions to NHMRC’s and ARC’s research integrity and misconduct policies, funding agreements and the Australian Research Integrity Committee Framework.

In addition to the Investigation Guide, the 2018 Code will be supported by a number of other supplementary guidance documents. The documents will support implementation of the principles and responsibilities in the 2018 Code and – when published – will establish a robust and coherent framework for research integrity and quality in Australia.

If you urgently need a specific grant application document only available at GrantConnect, but do not have a log-in, Research Development and Support can download the documentation for you. Please email your request to research.grants@flinders.edu.au.

Commencing with the ARC Centre of Excellence 2020 Grant Guidelines, all new ARC Grant Guidelines will only be published on GrantConnect.

Applications for Expressions of Interest for ARC Centres of Excellence 2020 are now open in the ARC’s Research Management System and will close on 4 July 2018. Submission documentation for this scheme is now available on GrantConnect. For application advice and assistance, please contact Maya Roberts, Research Development and Support.

The ARC’s Research Management System (RMS) will continue to be used to prepare and submit research proposals, assessments and rejoinders for the NCGP. Grant award data will also remain available in RMS in order to retain the end-to-end grant process, as well as provide longitudinal data.
