New OpportunitiesNew data sets access for HDRs and ECRs from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Australian Bureau of Statistics

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has extended provision of two highly confidential data integration initiatives to allow HDR students as well as junior research officers to access ABS’ Multi-Agency Data Integration Project (MADIP) and Business Longitudinal Analysis Data Environment (BLADE).

The BLADE combines business tax data and information from ABS surveys over time to provide a better understanding of Australian businesses and the economy.

The MADIP is a partnership among Australian Government agencies to develop a secure and enduring approach for combining information on healthcare, education, government payments, personal income tax, and population demographics (including the Census) to create a comprehensive picture of Australia over time.

More details about both products as well as data access arrangements can be found on the ABS website.

Any further questions about both initiatives and the application procedures can be directed to Dr Pawel Skuza, Statistical Consultant, Flinders Library. For other opportunities of obtaining confidentialised and open data access please refer to the Flinders' Library Statistical tools and services webpage.

New OpportunitiesWildlife Recovery Fund grants now open

Wildlife Recovery Fund banner

Landholders, community groups and researchers can now apply for bushfire recovery grants of up to $50,000 to help re-establish native habitat and support threatened and vulnerable native animals in South Australia.

The first round of the $400,000 Wildlife Recovery Fund is open for applicants to support the recovery of South Australia’s bushfire-affected plants and animals.

Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said that nearly 300,000 hectares of land in South Australia burnt this past summer, including around 90,000 hectares of national park land. "These grants are for landholders, community groups, and other organisations to deliver bushfire recovery projects such as native plant regeneration, feral animal and weed control, as well as projects to support species recovery like monitoring projects," said Minister Speirs.

"Projects that improve scientific knowledge of habitat and native plant and animal bushfire resilience and recovery are also encouraged. The State Government will work with Nature Foundation and the Wildlife and Habitat Recovery Taskforce to ensure sound planning, good science and local advice is used to allocate funds wisely, for the greatest benefits."

Nature Foundation Chair Jan Ferguson OAM said the supportive community response to the Wildlife Recovery Fund following the South Australian bushfires has been incredible. "The Fund has attracted wonderfully generous donations from across Australia and overseas with 100 per cent of donations going towards wildlife and habitat recovery work,” said Ms Ferguson. "Applicants can apply for funds up to $50,000 for activities to support the recovery of plants and animals."

For more information and to apply for a grant visit the Nature Foundation website.

Applications close at 5 pm on 12 June 2020. Successful applicants will be announced in July 2020. The Flinders internal closing date for a completed final draft application is 29 May 2020. For application advice and assistance, contact Mary Lyons, Senior Research Grants Officer (IGII).

The Wildlife Recovery Fund has raised more than $400,000 so far, and it continues to accept donations. You can donate by visiting the Nature Foundation website.

New OpportunitiesData from the Australian Survey of Social Attitudes 2018 - Religion is now available

AuSSA

The Australian Survey of Social Attitudes (AuSSA) is Australia’s main source of data for the scientific study of the social attitudes, beliefs and opinions of Australians, how they change over time, and how they compare with other societies. The survey is used to help researchers better understand how Australians think and feel about their lives.

It produces important information about the changing views and attitudes of Australians as we move through the 21st century. The final complied AuSSA 2018 "Religion" data is available to the public on the Australian Data Archive website.

AuSSA is also the Australian component of the International Social Survey Project (ISSP). The ISSP is a cross-national collaboration on surveys covering important topics. Each year, survey researchers in some 40 countries each do a national survey using the same questions. The ISSP focuses on a special topic each year, repeating that topic from time to time.

The topic for 2018 was Religion. This is the fourth time this has been the topic of the survey, having previously been the theme for the survey in 1991, 1998 and 2008. The AuSSA also allows us to compare Australia with countries all over the world.

The aims of the survey are to discover: the range of Australians’ views on topics that are important to all of us; how these views differ for people in different circumstances; how they have changed over the past quarter century; and how they compare with people in other countries.

The data from questions in sections B,C,D and E are currently embargoed until July 2021.

For more information on the AuSSA 2018 survey background, visit the Australian Consortium of Social and Political Research Inc (ACSPRI) website. Researchers from Flinders are able to submit questions for future surveys, as Flinders is a member of ACSPRI.

New OpportunitiesCapstone Editing's Early Career Academic Research Grant for Women 2020

    Capstone Editing

Capstone Editing's Early Career Academic Research Grant for Women is now open.

This grant provides financial support for female early career academics in recognition of the additional barriers they face in achieving academic success and advancing their careers. The grant provides up to A$5,000 for one academic per year to assist with the costs associated with a research project of her choosing leading towards a publication.

The grant can be used to cover any costs related to the research project, such as conducting a field trip; purchasing books, software or equipment; hiring a translator; travel to learn new techniques in a lab interstate or overseas; small lab equipment; key reagents to complete a project; performing surveys or interviews; and academic editing, such as for journal articles, manuscripts and conference papers. The grant can also be used to cover expenses that most university funding does not cover, such as those related to the need of academic women to secure paid child care to assist them to meet their work responsibilities and research goals, due to the continued prevalence of traditional gender roles around caring in the home. For more information visit the Capstone Editing website.

Capstone Editing’s grants and scholarships aim to invest in the future of academia and reward academic excellence, while easing both the financial burden of study for students and the inequities experienced by academic women in the workplace.

The closing date is 3 June 2020. The Flinders internal closing date for a completed final draft application is 20 May 2020. For application advice and assistance, contact Mary Lyons, Senior Research Grants Officer (IGII).
