ResearchNow Ethics & Biosafety is the new online platform for human research ethics at Flinders University. 

It can be accessed via Okta (add the "ResearchNow Ethics & Biosafety" chicklet to your dashboard) and allows researchers to apply for human research ethics approval online. To support the transition, two additional researcher training sessions will be held next week.

There are three forms available:

• HREC Application Form – for all new research projects requiring Ethics approval
• HREC Cross-Institutional Approval Form – for all research projects approved by an external Human Research Ethics Committee
• HREC Project Transfer Form – for all current projects approved under the old system and that do not expire on/or before 31 December 2020. These projects need to be transferred into the new system.

The ABC TOP 5 residencies provide an opportunity for applicants to experience a two-week in-house intensive placement based at the ABC.

The programs are designed to nurture the communication skills and media awareness of our emerging thinkers to help them share their knowledge and expertise with audiences seeking credible material and informed debate.

New in 2020, the ABC is offering the TOP 5 residency in Arts. This program is for graduate early-career practitioners and PhD researchers in visual arts, performance, design, architecture and screen. The five winners will undertake a two-week residency at the ABC Southbank offices in Melbourne in August 2020.

The ABC TOP 5 Science program is now in its sixth year. This residency is for early-career university PhD researchers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medical research (STEMM). The five winners will undertake a two-week residency at the ABC Ultimo offices in Sydney in October 2020.

The ABC TOP 5 Humanities program is for early career university PhD researchers in humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS). The five winners will undertake a two-week residency at ABC Ultimo offices in Sydney in September/October 2020.

The 2020 CSL Florey Next Generation Award will be conferred to a current PhD candidate who has demonstrated outstanding capability, creativity and potential in the biomedical sciences and/or health and medical research.

As well as the award trophy, the award currently carries a prize of $20,000 thanks to the generous support of CSL Limited. There is a maximum of two applications per organisation, one of which must be from a female researcher. Interested nominees/nominators are requested to contact Dani Milos, Office of Graduate Research, in the first instance.

Two runner-up prizes of $2,500 will also be awarded.

Global-X is a nine-month international science challenge worth up to US$750K that seeks revolutionary research through active worldwide cooperation. The mission of the Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global) is to serve as the enduring Navy and Marine Corps global presence in technical and operational communities, investing in trusted partnerships to discover and connect science and technology leaders for sustained maritime security. ONR Global recognises international scientists and engineers conduct excellent research that is creative and novel. This Global-X Challenge provides an opportunity for these international researchers to collaborate, generate revolutionary ideas, and demonstrate these ideas will succeed.

ONR Global invites outstanding international researchers to form multi-national, multidisciplinary teams to address one or more of the capability challenges. ONR Global will competitively select and fund promising revolutionary international research projects with both military and commercial value. Global-X Challenge therefore will stimulate new, promising, high-risk research concepts whose technology maturity may be accelerated under separate agile follow-on technology development efforts to meet present and future U.S. Navy and Marine Corps capability needs.

The Defence and Science Technology (DST) have released their strategy, More, together which sets the directions for defence science and technology to 2030.

It outlines DST's ambitions, aspirations and establishes the overall science and technology priorities for Defence.

This strategy seeks to ensure the national science and technology enterprise is nurtured and leveraged to achieve scale in the resources that are applied to research problems. It includes initiatives to focus resources on Defence’s highest strategic priorities, and supports more streamlined transitioning of ideas into capability. Embracing these challenges will ensure that Australia's military forces have a strategic advantage achieved through leap-ahead capabilities to prevail in contest environments.

The key objectives of the Strategy are to:

• Focus on larger science and technology programs supporting Defence strategic priorities.
• Increase scale by partnering within the national science and technology enterprise and international partners.
• Deliver impact and a capability edge through streamlined and secure innovation pathways.  

The Strategy is underpinned by three strategic pillars and introduces the Science, Technology and Research (STaR) Shot concept. While the STaR Shots focus the national science and technology enterprise on Defence objectives to deliver leap-ahead capabilities, the strategic pillars enable the STaR Shots and support the broader Defence S&T program.

The 7th Biennial ACSPRI Social Science Methodology Conference 2020, 2-4 December 2020 at the University of Sydney, has now opened the call for papers. The call will close on 24 September 2020.

The conference's four themes are: Research paradigms and designs; Research methods and techniques; Research technology and tools; and Datasets, data collections and data archiving. Researchers at all levels, from HDR to established are invited to submit abstracts using these themes and the proposed sessions listed below. Papers on any aspect of social science methodology will be considered.

The types of submissions considered include:

• Presentations where an abstract is reviewed (abstract in the conference proceedings). Plan for a 15 minute presentation
• Posters - including a student poster competition (abstract in the conference proceedings).
• Panel - 90 minute roundtable / panel discussion
• Plenary - 90 minute keynote

Sessions that have already been proposed include:

• Set theory in social science: data, frameworks, methods and applications
• Using historical institutionalism as a method for qualitative process mapping in comparative politics

ACSPRI is currently working on the assumption that the conference we will be able to go ahead in December. If this isn't possible, ACSPRI will communicate with all those who have submitted proposals to decide if a postponement or virtual conference would be the best way to proceed.

The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program supports industry-led collaborations between industry, researchers and the community. In its 28-year history, it has proven to be an effective model for linking researchers with industry to address R&D challenges with commercial outcomes.

Bidding for a CRC is a highly competitive process requiring cross-disciplinary teams to come together and collaborate. This takes planning, time and patience. Developed by the CRC Association and Collabforge, this workshop (3-4 June 2020) will combine practical bid-creation content with a deep dive into the theory and practice of collaboration.

The workshop will teach participants what makes a great bid, what the process of bid development entails, the roles of all bid participants, and how to build effective relationship/communication between researchers and industry to develop a compelling bid. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to develop their ideas in conjunction with guidance materials and feedback, finishing with substantive parts of their bid concepts being fleshed out (these can be hypothetical CRCs, bids planned for submission, or even ARC Linkage type concepts).

Attending this workshop will significantly increase the likelihood of a successful CRC or CRC-P application.

Who should attend:

• Researchers who have the responsibility for or interest to develop CRC and CRC-P bids.
• Administrators who have the responsibility for helping coordinate, develop, approve and or administer CRC and CRC-P bids (eg from Commercialisation, Research, Scholarships, etc)

Pfizer Global Medical Grants (GMG) supports the global healthcare community’s independent initiatives (e.g., research, quality improvement, or education) to improve patient outcomes in areas of unmet medical need that are aligned with Pfizer’s medical and/or scientific strategies.

Pfizer’s GMG competitive grant program involves a publicly posted general Request for Proposal (RFP) that provides detail regarding a general area of interest, sets timelines for review and approval, and uses an internal Pfizer review process to make final grant decisions. This open RFP call is for research in Gene & Anti-TFPI Therapies in Haemophilia.

Projects that will be considered for Pfizer support will focus on the following areas:

1. Basic Science of Gene Therapy for Haemophilia

Capstone Editing's Early Career Academic Research Grant for Women is now open.

This grant provides financial support for female early career academics in recognition of the additional barriers they face in achieving academic success and advancing their careers. The grant provides up to A$5,000 for one academic per year to assist with the costs associated with a research project of her choosing leading towards a publication.

The grant can be used to cover any costs related to the research project, such as conducting a field trip; purchasing books, software or equipment; hiring a translator; travel to learn new techniques in a lab interstate or overseas; small lab equipment; key reagents to complete a project; performing surveys or interviews; and academic editing, such as for journal articles, manuscripts and conference papers. The grant can also be used to cover expenses that most university funding does not cover, such as those related to the need of academic women to secure paid child care to assist them to meet their work responsibilities and research goals, due to the continued prevalence of traditional gender roles around caring in the home. The Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) provide a number of Research Establishment Fellowships to Fellows and trainees who wish to establish themselves in a research career.

To be eligible, Fellows and trainees must meet one of the two criteria, within 7 years of having completed a Masters, PhD or equivalent higher research degree or hold a research higher degree and be within 2 years of returning from working or studying overseas for a period of more than 12 months.

Funding provided by most of the awards can be used for:

• stipend support
• other support such as laboratory set-up costs
• a short-term Research Assistant appointment

• improve survival and ultimately find cures for childhood cancer.

Value: Up to AUD$90,000 per annum for 2 years.

The Jacquot Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To assist establishment of a career in nephrology research for a nephrologist who has completed a research higher degree in an area of relevance. Research may be either basic or clinical. The award can be used for:

• stipend support
• other support such as laboratory set-up costs
• a short-term Research Assistant appointment
• assist with travel and re-establishment costs for those taking up a postdoctoral fellowship overseas

Value: Up to AUD$90,000 per annum.
Eligibility: Nephrologists who are Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP.

Cottrell Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: For research or training in the areas of epidemiology, social or community medicine or for research or training relating to areas of special relevance to the Asia-Pacific area.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000 for 1 year.

The Sir Roy McCaughey Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000.

The Robert Maple-Brown Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$60,000.

Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the area of diseases associated with ageing and to promote leadership and community spirit within the profession and the community.
Value: Up to AUD$60,000 for 1 year.

RACP Diabetes Australia Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote clinical and basic research into the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.

RACP Endocrine Society of Australia Research Establishment Fellowship in Endocrinology

Purpose: To further research in endocrinology.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters, who are members of the Endocrine Society of Australia.

RACP/Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the fields of blood pressure, hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases. The research may be either basic or clinical but preference will be given to research relevant to new clinical developments.
Funding is primarily to provide stipend support. Use of a proportion of the funds will be considered for:

• other support such as laboratory set-up costs
• a short-term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.

The Servier Staff 'Barry Young' Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the field of oncology and the prevention and cure of cancer.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.

RACP AFRM Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in an area of rehabilitation medicine in the management of functional loss, activity limitation or participation restriction arising out of illness and injury.
Value: AUD$50,000 for 1 year
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM).

RACP Bayer Australia Medical Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in cardiovascular, anti-infective and metabolic medicine.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.

Barbara Cameron Australian Rheumatology Association Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote and encourage research into the cause and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Applicants need to demonstrate the project’s capacity for knowledge transfer to professionals and patients.Value: Up to AUD$50,000.

The Australian Academy of Science Early- and Mid-Career Researcher (EMCR) Forum Executive is inviting EMCRs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to complete a survey that aims to find out more about the challenges and barriers EMCRs face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The information collected from the survey will be used to inform the Forum’s advocacy activities and the key identified issues will be communicated to the Australian Academy of Science, funding bodies and employers of EMCRs to help them understand the needs of the EMCR community. Responses are anonymous.

This is an opportunity to share your insights on the current situation for your research, teaching and other aspects of productivity and for the EMCR Forum to hear if you have identified any (perhaps unexpected) positive outcomes.

The Yitpi Foundation has been established to encourage and promote research and education in the fields of crop science, particularly in relation to the wheat industry in southern Australia; and social science in linguistics of Australian languages and studies of the cultures of Australian Aborigines, particularly in relation to land usage.

The name Yitpi is a Kaurna word for seed or soul.

Guidelines for applications are attached below and grants will fall within the three categories listed below;

1. Crop science research
2. Agricultural education
3. Studies of the linguistics and culture of Australian Aboriginal peoples

Requests for <$15k will have greater chance of success but larger grants will be considered. Further, applications which have a high probability of having an impact on the relevant community in the short term will be given more favourable consideration.

The opportunity to drive the future of road safety innovation and technology is here, with applications for Round 1 of the Australian Government’s $12 million Road Safety Innovation Fund now open.

The Road Safety Innovation Fund is designed to contribute to the reduction of road trauma. The initiative was announced by the Australian Government on 29 March 2019 as a Budget measure to support road safety research and the development of new, innovative road safety technologies and products. The Round 1 Grant Opportunity will be delivered by way of an open competitive round with a total value of $2 million over four financial years. 

Estimated grant value for each project will be from $10,000 to $50,000.

The Australian Antarctic Science Council has released a 10 year Australian Antarctic Science Strategic Plan. 

The new plan has been developed following extensive consultation with the Antarctic science research sector, Commonwealth agencies, Tasmanian government, universities and industry stakeholders. 

The plan sets out three key research areas: 

• Environmental Protection and Management
• Ice, Ocean, Atmosphere and Earth Systems
• Human Presence and Activities in Antarctica. 

The plan also highlights the importance of digital integration, with data collection and analysis underpinning scientific outputs.

The next action for the Australian Antarctic Science Council is the development of an approach to implement research across the key research areas and to provide the required explanatory detail and clarity about priorities and research goals.
