Fresh Science - The national competition helping early-career researchers (ECRs) find, and then share, their stories of discovery.

Are you an ECR who has results or a discovery but hasn’t received any media attention? Nominate for Fresh Science.

The program takes up-and-coming researchers with no media experience and turns them into spokespeople for science, with a day of media training, learning how to pitch to business and government, and finishing with the traditional talk down the pub.

A Fresh Scientist should:

• be an ECR (includes honours students through to ECRs with no more than five years’ post-PhD)
• have with a peer-reviewed discovery that has had little or no media coverage
• have with some ability to present their ideas in everyday English (something Fresh Science can build on).

If selected, you will take part in:

• a one-day media and communication training course where you will meet and chat with journalists from TV, newspaper and radio; do some practice interviews
• a one day professional development program where you will meet people from business and government; learn how to pitch and make a pitch; write a short profile and some social media posts with the guidance of two professional science communicators
• an evening event at the local pub where you get to practice presenting your results in an understandable and fun way
• schools forums in some states where you will present for five minutes and take questions.

As part of Fresh Science, you will get a short, media-ready profile published and promoted via social media channels. Previous stories can be viewed on the Fresh Science website.

Fresh Science will run in Western Australia, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland this year, with events in October and November.

Applications are now open for the two $50,000 Metcalf Prizes for Stem Cell Research from the National Stem Cell Foundation of Australia.

The initiative aims to recognise and reward two exceptional mid-career stem cell researchers who are conducting excellent and sustained work focused on stem cell research.

The Metcalf Prizes are open to mid-career researchers, 5 to 10 years past their PhD or MD (research based), working in stem cell research in Australia.

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from junior scientists to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States of America in 2020.

The deadline for applications is 9 am (AEST) Friday 13 September 2019.

The successful applicant will receive funding of up to A$2600 towards a direct return airfare between Australia and America, a once-off living allowance of A$400 provided by the Adam J Berry Memorial Fund. The NIH will provide a daily stipend during the stay in America.

Applicants are expected to be undertaking or intending to undertake PhD study in Australia, and the proposed visit should initiate long-term collaborations and facilitate the development of the applicant’s career. The duration of the visit should be between 6 and 13 weeks and must occur in the 2020 calendar year.

The Road Home is pleased to invite applications for its 2019 The Road Home Project Grant Round.

Grants are available for research projects into the health and wellbeing of veterans, emergency service personnel and their families.

The theme for this year is ‘Families’. This can include areas as broad as (but not limited to):

• Research projects focusing on Military and First Responder Families
• The concept of Post-Traumatic Growth and its impact on family welfare
• The impact on families of Gender differences in PTSD or Female Veterans and First responders
• Family and domestic violence in an Australia Defence Force context
• Rates of anxiety in defence children and how they compare to the general population

Applications for the four following grants are available to researchers across Australia:

• The Colonel Susan Neuhaus CSC (Ret’d) Fellowship – $50,000 per annum over two years
• The Air-Vice Marshal Brent Espeland Memorial Fellowship – $50,000 per annum over three years
• The Road Home Project Grant – $50,000 for one year
• The Prabha Seshadri Grant – $60,000 for one year: This grant is only available for research to be conducted in affiliation with a Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (SALHN) site (such as the Jamie Larcombe Centre, Flinders Medical Centre and the Repat Reactivation site).

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Snowdome Foundation, and the Leukaemia Foundation are partnering to launch a competitive grant to advance breakthroughs for the treatment of blood cancers.

The intent is to fund two $650,000 (USD) awards. The proposals must be translational in nature and the principle investigator or co-principle investigator must be from Australia.

Letters of Intent must be submitted via the LLS Research Portal by the deadline of 3:00 pm EDT, 31 August 2019. The Flinders internal closing date for a completed final draft is 16 August 2019. While any area of blood cancer research will be considered, the organisations especially seek work focused on the role of epigenetics in blood cancer.

Only the most promising projects will be invited to submit a full application.

This opportunity will be considered as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society call for letters of intent for their annual Translational Research Program (TRP).

The TRP aims to put the research on the bench-to-bedside fast track when it comes to finding better treatment and cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society funds new and innovative research that shows high promise for translating basic biomedical knowledge to clinical application.

Applications are sought proposing novel approaches to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of hematological malignancies and related pre-malignant conditions. Proposals should be based on molecular, cellular or integrated systems findings and be conceptually innovative. The application should have a clear plan for the eventual clinical translation of the studies proposed and the results expected. This feature will be an important consideration of the review process.

This program is intended to provide support over an initial three-year period. Two additional years may be available through the competitive, peer-reviewed TRP Renewal process to solidify progress made in the initial award and further support a clinical trial.

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (CCF) seeks to accelerate the development of products that aim to improve the quality of life of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Toward that end, the Foundation has launched IBD Ventures, a new program and dedicated funding mechanism to support product-oriented research and development. Companies and academic investigators can apply.

Funding up to $500,000 per project per year will be considered. In addition, funded programs will be offered accelerator resources and advising.

The Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Inc (ACSPRI) have now opened enrolments for their Sydney Spring Program.

ACSPRI will be offering one week of courses at Macquarie University from 23-27 September 2019.

The early bird deadline for enrolments is 14 August 2019, so be sure to enrol early to take advantage of the discount. Flinders University is a member organisation of ACSPRI.

Attending an ACSPRI course includes the opportunity to network with other researchers from a variety of fields across Australia.

All courses are small group and intensive, and run from 9 am to 5 pm for the week (with breaks throughout and an early finish on Friday).  Morning and afternoon tea and lunch breaks provide ample opportunity to share and exchange ideas with other researchers.

The Betty Laidlaw MND Research Prize 2019

The Betty Laidlaw MND Research Prize aims to reward an outstanding *mid-career researcher with a demonstrated background of excellence in neuroscience research. The Prize is for an innovative 2-year project to advance the understanding of classical MND with a clear potential for effective treatments. It aims to support research commencing in the calendar year 2020.

The three-year Fellowships aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on ALS/MND.

Innovator Grants

Jenny and Graham Lang Collaboration Travel Grant 2019

Awarded to support travel and associated costs to attend the 30th International Symposium on ALS/MND in Perth on December 4-6 2019. Final year PhD students and early postdoctoral fellows will be considered favourably. Applicants who have submitted a Symposium presentation abstract will be considered favourably.

PhD Top-up Grant

The PhD Scholarship Top-up Grant is awarded as an incentive to an outstanding PhD student. The grant will provide a $5,000 per annum stipend for a PhD candidate. Applications for PhD top-up grants will close 31 January 2020.

The ARC and NHMRC Expressions of Interest (EoIs) process is now open, closing on 29 July 2019.

EoIs are an indication of your intention to apply for ARC and NMHRC funding programs, and enable you to access to additional benefits and opportunities that can assist and support you and your application(s), such as grant development, external review, mentorship and the incentive scheme.

A vital component of achieving the University’s strategic goal to increase its research intensity is to enhance our success with category 1 competitive funding schemes, primarily those of the ARC, the NHMRC and the MRFF. Key to this is providing effective support and incentives for grant applications.  To this end, grant application support and a range of co-investments supporting successful applications as incentives to apply, will again be offered this year.  

The Expression of Interest (EoI) process will give you the opportunity to benefit from the support and incentives scheme, in particular to secure an external professional review of your draft grant application.  Feedback from earlier this year shows that the external reviews are greatly valued.

If you wish to be considered for an external review you will need to return the EoI by the deadline of 29 July 2019. 

The time required for completion of the EoI form is not onerous.  

The EoI deadline will ensure optimal support for the development of applications and allow better targeting of researcher training and development workshops ('Grants Evolution') to be held in August and September. EoIs are also important sources of information for College Deans of Research in regard to potential College peer mentorship, review and support.

For your information, a ‘near miss funding’ scheme will be available to support development of re-submissions of ARC Discovery Projects and NHMRC Ideas Grants that, while unsuccessful, were ranked highly.  Information on the co-investments schemes associated with successful grant applications and on support for other grant and fellowship applications will follow by separate email.

The 2019 Flinders Foundation Health Seed Grant Round is now open to all researchers across the Flinders medical precinct, including Flinders University researchers involved in health and medical research.

Up to $25,000 in seed funding is available for each research project. The seed funding will enable researchers to produce preliminary data to apply for larger grants from national and international funding bodies and will result in many research discoveries and advances in health.

Flinders Foundation is proud to offer the grant round to support health and medical researchers from Flinders University and the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network, made possible thanks to generous donors and supporters in the community.

Invitations are now open for the submission of abstracts for the 19th Australian Space Research Conference (ASRC).

To be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 30 September to 2 October 2019, this will be the thirteenth ASRC jointly sponsored and organised by the National Committee for Space and Radio Science (NCSRS) and the National Space Society of Australia (NSSA), with the support of the Mars Society of Australia (MSA).

The 2019 conference will be held in conjunction with the South Australia Space Forum, convened by the South Australian Space Industry Centre. This is a major new initiative that shows the increasing importance of space research in space industry and vice versa.  

The ASRC is intended to be the primary annual meeting for Australian researchers in space science, technology, and industry. It welcomes space scientists, engineers, educators, and workers in industry, government and NGOs. 

The scope of the conference covers both fundamental and applied research related to space science, engineering and technologies, including the following:

• Space science, including space and atmospheric physics, Earth observation and remote sensing from/of space, planetary sciences, astrobiology and life sciences, and space-based astronomy and astrophysics.
• Space engineering and technology, including communications, navigation, space operations, propulsion, and spacecraft design, testing, and implementation.
• Space industry
• Space archaeology and indigenous sky knowledge (or archeo-astronomy)
• Space situational awareness (SSA) and space weather
• Current and future Australian space projects
• Government, international relations and law
• Education and outreach

There will be a number of special sessions not on specific research areas including,

1. the national context, as seen by key Government entities, the Academy of Science, industry groups, Centres, and others, including connections to national strategic roadmaps for research infrastructure,

3. a gender equity and diversity session, and

The first wave of data collection for The Australian Survey of Social Attitudes (AuSSA) is almost complete. There is now an opportunity to contribute questions to the second and subsequent waves by sponsoring a question, or questions, relevant to this year's theme of "Social Inequality".

The proposed questions to be included in the second wave of the 2019 survey must be confirmed by 19 July 2019. Data collection will begin for the second wave in August.

AuSSA is run as an annual postal survey using a nationally representative sample (drawn from the Australian Electoral Roll) of at least 1200 adult Australians in total, sampled at four periods over the year: May, August and November 2019 and February 2020. Flinders Researchers may partner with ACSPRI as sponsors of AuSSA entitling them to include additional questions. The fee will be $1,000 (exc GST) per question (i.e. per 'tick') for the full sample of 1200, or $400 to be included in any one of the 4 sub-samples. Please note: Larger modules of questions will receive a significant discount to this rate.

AuSSA is an important source of data for the scientific study of the social attitudes, beliefs and opinions of Australians, how they change over time, and how they compare with other societies.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award timeline change in 2022 – Advance Notice of significant change

The ARC will significantly change the application closing date for the subsequent round of the DECRA scheme. The DECRA 2022 round will close in November 2020 to align with the Future Fellowships scheme timeline. This decision follows supportive feedback received from stakeholders. To support the transition to the new timeline, the ARC will adjust eligibility periods for PhD conferral so that no candidates are disadvantaged.

The Global Alliance Conference on Post-Traumatic Stress 2019 aims to showcase the latest research, effective models of care for trauma, the power of collaboration and future directions for wellbeing for veterans, first responders and their families.

Over three days, participants will hear from a range of experts including trauma therapists and a number of global thought leaders on research, treatment and multidisciplinary models of care.

The conference, to be held on 6-8 November 2019 at the Adelaide Oval, is aimed at leading researchers, clinicians, policy makers in Defence and Veterans Affairs and Mental Health, service providers and lived experience participants. 

World-leading experts will present their latest research, including Associate Professor Heidi Cramm, CIMVHR, School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University, Canada, and Scholar in Residence (Family) at the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research & Treatment, and Professor Nicola Fear, Department of Military Mental Health, King’s College London.

Flinders' Professor Sharon Lawn will be presenting on 'Family involvement in post-traumatic growth: missed opportunities from living vicariously with PTSD' at the conference.

The National Stroke Foundation invites applications for its early-career researcher (ECR) seed grants.

These seed grants support pilot or feasibility studies on stroke treatment and care that will be used to inform a larger nationally competitive grant submission such as National Health and Medical Research Council project grants.

Four Seed Grants in total of up to $50,000 per grant are available to ECRs, addressing (at least) one of the Stroke Foundation 2020 Research Priority Areas, listed below. One of the four Seed Grants is allocated to a Support for Carers project in the 2020 Round.

These grants are to conduct pilot or feasibility studies that will be used to inform a larger nationally competitive grant submission (e.g. NHMRC project grants).

2020 Research Priority Areas

To improve access to and delivery of:

1. long term community support (e.g. continuity of care, health services, and rehabilitation) with outcome measures beyond 6 months;
2. interventions for long term psychosocial recovery (i.e. recovery of cognition, communication, and emotional and social wellbeing) with outcome measures beyond 6 months;
3. health services and pathways of stroke management, including proposals addressing implementation and change in practice (i.e. translation into practice for acute stroke care studies);
4. support for the diverse needs of Carers.
