The second round of the Medical Research Future Fund – Targeted Health System & Community Organisation Research grant opportunity will open soon for applications in RGMS and is forecast on GrantConnect.

Grant guidelines will be available on GrantConnect at the time of opening. As soon as the dates are released, Research Development and Support will advise researchers.

The grant opportunity will support research to address: 

• questions that focus on comparative effectiveness of health services and areas of health system practice with low or insubstantial evidence
• gaps in knowledge and evidence relating to health system problems important to the public, providing opportunities to explore consumer-driven research. 

Health system research question topics for this grant opportunity are:

1. Mobile X-ray services provided within residential aged care facilities. 
2. Health economics study of the impacts and costs associated with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Free research methodology online training and 50% discounted Adelaide based workshops are currently available through the Center for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis’ (CARMA).

Flinders Library has extended the university-wide access to quantitative and qualitative online research methodology training provided through the International Video Library Program (IVLP) conducted by CARMA. 

There are over 140 recorded, high-quality lectures available FREE of charge for our staff and students that address various aspects of undertaking research. A full list of lectures and information on how to register can be found and accessed through Flinders Library.

The University’s participation in the IVLP also allows our researchers to obtain a 50% discount for CARMA’s short courses to be conducted in Adelaide in early April 2019. Two workshops each of 2.5 days duration are offered on: Systematic Reviews / Meta-Analysis and Introduction to Structural Equation Methods.

This session will give an overview of NHMRC Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies Grants, step you through the process of applying and give you an overview of how we can support you.

Between May and July 2018, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) conducted a series of consultations to inform the development of a new research strategy, which will guide their research investment decision making from 2019-2022.

An information session will be held on Friday, 1 March 2019, at 3.30-4.30pm EST, during which the Research Chair Emeritus Professor Bruce Armstrong and PCFA staff will be able to answer questions

The consultations in 2018 were held with prostate cancer clinicians, PCFA’s Research Advisory Committee, men with localised prostate cancer, men with advanced prostate cancer, National Support and Community Outreach Committee, and PCFA staff.

During the development of the strategy, they identified the top priorities of the Australian prostate cancer community, and gaps in the current research that align with these priorities.

This strategy provides a clear guide as to how PCFA research funding is disbursed for the information for researchers, clinicians and the whole prostate cancer community.

In preparation for the opening of the 2019 funding round, the full strategy document outlining the objectives, principles and priorities of PCFA’s Research program 2019-2022 is available through the PCFA website.

The Channel 7 Children’s Research Foundation of South Australia (CRF) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) to fund projects and ECRs for Community-based Studies, Clinical Studies, or Basic Science research projects into conditions that may affect the health, education and welfare of children.

The CRF will make available approximately $1.5M to be applied across multiple grants in the fields of Allied Health, Dentistry, Education, Environment, Nursing, Medicine, Mental Health, Midwifery and Social Sciences.

In addition, the following research priority areas will be given extra weighting in the grant assessment process:

• improving child protection
• improving children’s mental health
• reducing childhood obesity, and
• understanding the social determinants of childhood health and development.

Projects may be conducted over one or two years; the maximum funding per grant will be $100,000 (or $40,000 for Early Career researchers), irrespective of the project duration.

National collaboration is encouraged and international collaboration may be allowed where special skills are not available in South Australia, in order to ensure the application attains the ‘world standard’.

It is preferable that all members of the research team are located in South Australia.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full Grant Application in late May 2019.

The Hospital Research Foundation (HRF) has opened applications for its 2019 Statewide Travel Grants for Researchers and Higher Degree Students within South Australia.

Awards of up to $1,000 will be considered for national travel and up to $4,000 for international travel.

This Travel Grant round will be open throughout 2019 without interruption and applications can be submitted at any time. All submissions are to be through Smarty Grants prior to the travel and applicants will be advised within four weeks of submission.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is inviting grant proposals for three Grand Challenges Explorations, and an Innovation Incubator.

The Grand Challenges Explorations are:

• Emerging Technologies for New Solutions in Global Health Priority Areas, 
• Environmental niches of Salmonella Typhi, and 
• Increasing Demand for Vaccination Services.

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) grants have already been awarded to over 1420 researchers in more than 65 countries. Initial grants are for USD $100,000 and successful projects are eligible to receive follow-on funding of up to USD $1 million. Proposals are solicited twice a year for an expanding set of global health and development challenges.

Applications are only two pages, and no preliminary data is required. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any type of organisation, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organisations and for-profit companies.

Grand Challenges: Neglected Tropical Diseases Data Innovation Incubator seeks innovative ideas for how to improve the quality, completeness, and timeliness of routine neglected tropical disease data to help target interventions to all at-risk populations and achieve high intervention coverage and maximal impact on infection and morbidity.

Application deadline is 25 March, 2019 11.30 am PDT. The Flinders internal closing date is 11 March 2019.

Applications are now open for the 2019 ICM Agrifood Award and close 12.00pm AEST Friday 12 April 2019.

The ICM Agrifood Award is an early career award for two outstanding agriculture or food scientists or technologists.

Two of Australia’s best young food and agriculture professionals will win the 2019 ICM Agrifood Award, which will be awarded by the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering at the Academy 2019 Innovation Dinner on 13 June in Sydney. One female and one male winner will each receive a cash prize of $5000.

The winners will have achieved substantial recognition for their work in a field critical to continued improvement of the Australian food sector in the past five years, and be under 40 years of age at 1 January 2019.

Both will:

• have demonstrated excellence, innovation and impact in a field related to food and agriculture in Australia;
• be 40 years old or under on the first day of the year in which the ICM Award is made (with allowance made for career breaks due to family or carer responsibilities);
• be acknowledged by peers for outstanding contributions to the food and agriculture sector in the past five years; and
• have advanced the standing of the broad profession of agriculture and food.

The 20th Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Conference will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, 17 – 20 September 2019.

Each year at the CRC Association Annual Conference a number of early career researchers are selected to attend and present their research to the conference. Initial entries are submitted in a 30-second video. Finalists give a 5-minute presentation at the conference. The prize money available is $10,000 in total.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN)’s 2019 Grants Round open 4 March, with up to $100,000 available for successful projects.

ACCAN’s Grants Program seeks to better enable consumers to navigate the communications market, and to establish a sound body of evidence for representation on behalf of the communications consumer.

Applications are sought from the community sector, industry, individuals, small business and researchers, with cross-sectoral collaborations encouraged.

All applications are judged by an Independent Panel according to the Program's assessment process which is competitive, merit-based and guided by assessment criteria.

For this Round, projects can fall under one of two Streams:

• Research Stream – for applications for consumer-focused research
• Education and Representation Stream - for work that is predominantly consumer education and/or representation focussed

Applications for the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Atmospheric Aerosols are now open to graduate students and early-career researchers.

The school will be held from 22 July to 2 August 2019 at the University of São Paulo and applications to attend will close on 24 March 2019.

Internationally renowned scientists will introduce participants to the state-of-the-art of aerosol research and will highlight the most interesting open scientific questions, thus contributing to a solid formation of these future scientists. The school environment was tailored to promote great interaction between participants and lecturers, thus allowing the development of collaborative networks that will boost the careers of these young scientists.

The target audience is graduate students and early career scientists. Priority will be given to candidates currently enrolled in graduate programs (Masters/MSc and Doctoral/PhD courses), but senior undergraduate and young researchers (up to 5yr from PhD) are also welcome. We encourage applications from candidates with different academic backgrounds (natural, social and human sciences, engineering) provided their academic work is related to the themes of the school.

Bullying. It’s physically harmful, socially isolating and psychologically damaging, affecting the mental health and wellbeing of 1 in 5 Aussie kids. 

Whilst face-to-face bullying is widely recognised, cyberbullying poses broader challenges, one of which requires an integrated approach when implementing effective interventions.

Join Professor Phillip Slee at this free event, who’ll discuss how a Flinders University initiative is providing new insights into the effective implementation of anti-bullying programs, supporting schools across South Australia and the globe address the issue.

The SA Science Excellence Awards showcase the critical importance of science and research to the development of industry and our society.

The awards acknowledge the achievements of talented individuals, including recent PhD graduates and early career science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) researchers, who are making an outstanding contribution to society both nationally and internationally.

Awards are presented in five categories:

• STEM Educator of the Year (split into School Teaching and Tertiary Teaching categories)

Flinders’ Doctoral students and ECRs have the opportunity to upskill in Knowledge Translation (KT) during the week of 4 March 2019.

Theoretical and practically-inspired sessions will focus on how to integrate KT into research and grant applications in health, nursing, social sciences and humanities.

This initiative is part of a five day Intensive for DrPH students in CMPH which is being opened for Flinders’ Doctoral and ECRs. Doctoral supervisors are also welcome. 

Most research is never used. Grants require evidence of impact. KT can help.

The National Foundation for Medical Research and Innovation (NFMRI)’s funding seeks to support the translation of biomedical research projects that have strong potential in addressing unmet community needs.

Funding provided by NFMRI is very different from other foundations and traditional funding sources, which is why they ask that applicants read more about the Foundation prior to submitting a proposal.

Around the beginning of each calendar year, NFMRI opens its general grant round, which is open nationally and seeks to support innovative biomedical research projects covering all diseases and conditions.

From time to time, via their partnerships they are able to offer targeted funding rounds based around their partner’s mission and objectives.

Those interested in applying for NFMRI funding should read more about their strategy and portfolios prior to making a submission. Their success stories and current grants also provide a good indication as to the types of projects they normally support.

Cystic Fibrosis Grant Round - OPEN

Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is partnering with NFMRI to provide research funding specific to cystic fibrosis. The grant will be called the Barbara Stow-Smith CF Innovation Grant, in honour of the Cure4 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s first bequest.

Focus: Expressions of interest will be called in three key gap areas known as social investment portfolios. Priority will be given to portfolios two and three that focus on critical translational research activities accessing external research collaborations and capabilities to undertake critical research studies.
